Original artistic language
Retractable
Neo Realism
Visions of the future. Experiences of the past. Materialised in the present.
Retractable Neo Realism is a contemporary artistic language and a way of thinking. It is not bound to a single style, medium or aesthetic. It exists for works that resist permanent classification, moving freely between abstraction, figuration, geometry, realism and beyond.
At its core is the ability to separate moments, emotions and experiences; revisit them independently; view them from new perspectives; and reconnect them to understand the present as a whole. The past can be revisited without being relived. The future can be imagined without limitation. The present becomes the meeting point of both.
Retractable describes movement—backwards, forwards, inwards and outwards. The work can withdraw from certainty, transform and reappear in a new form. Meaning is fluid rather than fixed.
Neo Realism does not reproduce reality exactly as it is seen. It materialises reality as it is remembered, experienced, imagined, anticipated and felt.
“The mind does not move in a straight line. It revisits, reframes, restructures. Retractable Neo Realism is the art of that movement.”View the original concept statement ↗

The artist
R.P. Gribben
R.P. Gribben is a Scottish artist based in East London. His paintings move between portraiture and abstraction, using forceful colour, exposed mark-making and recurring symbols to examine identity, pressure and the unstable space between inner and outer life.
The work keeps the evidence of its making visible. Scratches, revisions, written fragments and hard-edged gestures become part of the subject rather than something to conceal.
